Cub Scout & Webelos Scout Program Planning
BOYS' LIFE AND SCOUTING MAGAZINES: YOUR PROGRAM PARTNERS
There's no big secret to successful Cub Scouting - it's good leadership and exciting programs. You furnish the leadership. Your three program partners - Boys' Life, Scouting, with its program helps, and the Program Notebook - furnish most of the program ideas.
For Cub Scout Leaders:
IN SCOUTING MAGAZINE
Each year Cub Scout program helps are published in Scouting magazine according to this schedule:
The May-June issue contains a guide to using Program Helps, planning tips, resources, and the suggested themes for September and October; the September issue has the November, December, and January themes; no helps are included in the October issue; the November-December issue has the February and March themes; the January-February issue has the April and May themes; and March-April issue includes the June, July, and August themes.
Cub Scout Program Helps are in Scouting magazine issues that go to Cubmasters and assistants, den leaders and assistants, den leader coaches, and commissioners.
In addition to the segments bound into the magazine noted above, you may purchase from your council service center a single, annual edition, Cub Scout Program Helps 2007-2008 (No. 34304C), containing the entire year's program helps for Cub Scouting.
IN BOYS' LIFE
Boys' Life supports the nationally suggested theme for each month and gives its boy readers ideas of things to do connected with the theme.
Boys' Life goes by mail to Cub Scouts who subscribe through their pack and the local council service center. Discount subscription rates are available to all registered Tiger Cubs and Cub Scouts.
Founded in 1911, Boys' Life continues to offer a treasure chest full of program crafts, skill ideas, general interest articles and stories, exciting regular features, and cartoon pages. Each issue shows hints on activities related to the nationally suggested theme for the month. This material always appears one month before the theme to allow boy readers and adult leaders time to plan to use the ideas.
The Cub Scout Leader's Program Notebook rolls off the presses each spring and is available from your local council service center. In the Program Notebook you as the unit leader or den leader can take ideas from all sources and tailor-make your own meeting or activity agenda. The booklet contains loads of space for you to jot down ideas and plans for your unit's program; a section that recaps the nationally-suggested theme and the Webelos Scout activity badges for that month; four pages on which you can write your den meeting details for each month; and one page for each pack leaders' meeting and for the pack meeting.
For Webelos Scout Leaders:
The Webelos Leader Guide (No. 33853C) includes most of the information a Webelos leader needs for meeting preparation. It contains information formerly found in Webelos Den Activities, the Webelos Planning Guide, and Webelos Scout Program Helps.
